Product Description
- EN ISO 14343-A : G 18 8 Mn SF
- AWS A5.9 : ER307 (mod)
- M12 shielding gas only
FOR HARDOX 400 / 450 / 500:
- Use a 97.5% Argon 2.5% Co2 or a 95/5 shielding gas (no 2% oxygen)
- BOC SPECSHIELD® (2.5% Carbon Dioxide & balance Argon) is excellent
- 95/5 gas produces great results, and plays nicely with austenitic 307 weld metal
- Set @ approx. 18 ltr p/min (20 lpm if there is a draft)
- Keep heat input controlled
- Use stringer beads, not wide weaves
- Let it cool slowly (no quenching)
- Preheat only if the plate is thick (≥20 mm). Thick 500 grade needs 150°C pre-heat
- NOTE. 10–20% CO₂ mixes increases hardness and cracking risk
Hardox 400, 450 and 500 is usually used for the below parts:
- Cutting edges
- Side cutters / shrouds
- Wear strips
- Bottom wear plates
- Internal liners (on severe-duty buckets)
The main bucket shell, back plate, and cheek plates are usually S355 grade (12.63 SG3 wire needed).
Austenitic steels are:
-
✅ Non-magnetic (or only very weakly magnetic) ie. 316
-
✅ Very tough and ductile (don’t crack easily)
-
✅ Excellent corrosion resistance
-
✅ Good for welding (low risk of hydrogen cracking)
-
❌ Not hardenable by heat treatment (only by cold work)
307 is an austenitic stainless filler (high manganese, high nickel), but mainly used for mild to stainless (dissimilar). It’s designed to stay fully austenitic after welding.
