A premium 307 ‘problem solving wire’ for welding Hardox 400, 450, and 500. This is a continuous solid corrosion resisting chromium-nickel-manganese wire for welding of austenitic stainless alloys of 18% Cr, 8% Ni, 7% Mn types.

OK Autrod 16.95 has a general corrosion resistance similar to that of the corresponding parent metal. The higher silicon content improves the welding properties, such as wetting.

The product is a modified variant of ER307, basically with a higher Mn content to make the weld metal less sensitive to hot cracking. When used for joining dissimilar materials the corrosion resistance is of secondary importance.

The alloy is used in a wide range of applications across the industry including:

  • Joining of austenitic, manganese, work-hardenable steels
  • Armourplate and heat treated / heat resistant steels
  • Stainless steel to carbon steel
  • Stainless to low-alloy steels
  • Tool steels to mild steel

The benefits of 307:

  • It handles different expansion rates very well without cracking
  • High manganese content = absorbs stresses
  • High Mn + Ni = very crack-tolerant
  • Fully austenitic weld metal = no brittle martensite (martensite is a hard and very brittle solid hardened steel)
  • Very high ductility (which means it bends for breaking / absorbs vibration / tolerates load stresses / resists cold cracking)
  • Excellent tolerance of carbon pickup
  • 307 is the problem-solver when cracking, hardness, or unknown steel is involved
  • Great for unknown steel grades, old cast or repaired components
  • Works for shock-loaded or vibrating parts
  • It has excellent crack resistance, especially where normal 308/309 would fail
  • 307 stays tough and ductile, even when the parent metal is hard or brittle

Product Description

SPECS:

  • EN ISO 14343-A : G 18 8 Mn SF
  • AWS A5.9 : ER307 (mod)
  • M12 shielding gas only

FOR HARDOX 400 / 450 / 500:

  • Use a 97.5% Argon 2.5% Co2 or a 95/5 shielding gas (no 2% oxygen)
  • BOC SPECSHIELD® (2.5% Carbon Dioxide & balance Argon) is excellent
  • 95/5 gas produces great results, and plays nicely with austenitic 307 weld metal
  • Set @ approx. 18 ltr p/min (20 lpm if there is a draft)
  • Keep heat input controlled
  • Use stringer beads, not wide weaves
  • Let it cool slowly (no quenching)
  • Preheat only if the plate is thick (≥20 mm). Thick 500 grade needs 150°C pre-heat
  • NOTE. 10–20% CO₂ mixes increases hardness and cracking risk

Hardox 400, 450 and 500 is usually used for the below parts:

  • Cutting edges
  • Side cutters / shrouds
  • Wear strips
  • Bottom wear plates
  • Internal liners (on severe-duty buckets)

The main bucket shell, back plate, and cheek plates are usually S355 grade (12.63 SG3 wire needed).

Austenitic steels are:

  • Non-magnetic (or only very weakly magnetic) ie. 316

  • Very tough and ductile (don’t crack easily)

  • Excellent corrosion resistance

  • Good for welding (low risk of hydrogen cracking)

  • Not hardenable by heat treatment (only by cold work)

307 is an austenitic stainless filler (high manganese, high nickel), but mainly used for mild to stainless (dissimilar). It’s designed to stay fully austenitic after welding.
