Types of Air Arc Gouging Carbons

Pointed Copperclad DC Electrodes

The most common and widely used air carbon arc gouging electrode. The copper coating improves electrical conductivity, helps maintain carbon diameter at the point of the arc, and provides efficient, stable gouging performance. Ideal for general weld removal, back gouging, crack excavation, weld preparation, and fabrication repairs across virtually all industries.

Jointed Copperclad DC Electrodes

Designed for deep groove gouging and extended operation where maximum reach is required. The threaded joint system allows additional carbon sections to be added as the electrode is consumed, reducing downtime and improving productivity during long-duration gouging operations such as pressure vessel fabrication, shipbuilding, and heavy structural work.

Pointed Plain DC Electrodes

Manufactured without copper plating for applications where copper contamination must be avoided. Commonly used in specialist applications where material specifications or metallurgical requirements prohibit any risk of copper transfer to the parent material.

Pointed Copperclad AC Electrodes

Specifically designed for operation on AC power sources. Special arc stabilising materials are added to improve arc characteristics and maintain stable gouging performance where alternating current welding equipment is being used.

Flat Copperclad DC Electrodes

Designed for controlled metal removal and scarfing applications. The flat profile produces wider grooves and is particularly effective for:

  • removing weld crowns
  • surface defect removal
  • die repair work
  • temporary attachment removal
  • billet scarfing

where precise material removal is required.

Half-Round Copperclad DC Electrodes

Combining the benefits of both round and flat electrode designs, half-round carbons provide excellent versatility across a wide range of gouging and scarfing applications. They are particularly useful where operators require both deep penetration and wider material removal profiles from a single electrode type.

Choosing the Correct Carbon

Selecting the correct air arc gouging carbon depends upon:

  • welding power source output
  • compressor capacity
  • required groove profile
  • material thickness
  • accessibility
  • productivity requirements

Spectrum can advise on the optimum carbon type, diameter, and amperage requirements to maximise metal removal rates whilst reducing carbon consumption and operating costs.
