Benefits of Column & Boom Automation
As the UK’s largest stockist of rental column and boom automation systems, Spectrum Welding Supplies delivers advanced welding solutions for the most demanding heavy engineering, pressure vessel, pipe, offshore, nuclear, and wind turbine fabrication projects. Designed for maximum flexibility, reach, and weld quality, column and boom systems provide precise torch positioning over long seams, circumferential welds, and large-diameter fabrications, dramatically improving productivity, repeatability, and operator safety.
The UK’s Largest Rental Fleet
Spectrum operates the UK’s largest hire fleet of column and boom welding systems, allowing customers immediate access to specialist automation for shutdowns, major projects, and production support. Although these systems are highly specialist and therefore hired less frequently than tractors or rotators, they remain absolutely critical for large-scale, high-integrity welding operations.
Configurable for Any Size Application
Our column and boom systems can be configured to suit virtually any fabrication size, with bespoke column heights and boom arm reaches available to suit everything from small vessels and pipe sections through to major offshore structures and large wind turbine components, which typically require the greatest reach and clearance.
Manual Fine Tune Slides
Manual fine tune slide systems provide precise torch positioning adjustment, allowing the operator to accurately set wire stick-out, sidewall location, and seam tracking position for critical submerged arc and automated welding applications.
Powered Fine Tune Slides
Where manual adjustment handles are difficult to access due to height, reach, or physical constraints, powered slide systems can be fitted to allow remote positioning control. This makes operation significantly easier, safer, and more precise, particularly on larger fabrications and elevated welding positions.
Static Base Configurations
Static base column and boom systems provide a robust fixed-position solution for workshop-based welding cells, pressure vessel manufacture, pipe production, and repetitive fabrication work where the component remains positioned within a dedicated welding bay.
Travelling Base Systems
Travelling base column and boom systems allow the entire unit to move along rails or a track system, making them ideal for long vessel seams, beam fabrication, wind tower sections, and large structural welds where multiple weld locations must be reached without repositioning the workpiece.
OPC Flux Recovery Systems
OPC flux recovery systems provide highly efficient flux collection, separation, and reuse during submerged arc welding operations. By recovering unused flux directly from the weld zone, these systems reduce consumable waste, improve housekeeping, and maintain a cleaner, more efficient production environment.
Continuous Flux Fed Systems
Compressed-air flux fed systems allow continuous delivery of submerged arc flux directly to the welding head, removing the need for repeated manual refilling of the flux hopper. This significantly improves productivity on long weld runs and high-deposition automated applications.
Maximum Productivity & Weld Quality
Column and boom automation delivers exceptional deposition rates, superior weld consistency, precise seam tracking, and fully repeatable welding procedures, making it the preferred solution for critical fabrication sectors.
Column & Boom Automation – Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing the correct column and boom system is critical to ensure the equipment safely fits within your workshop, clears the workpiece when mounted on rotators, and provides the required weld reach. Our team will always help size the correct system before supply, ensuring the setup works safely and efficiently within your fabrication environment.
What Size Column & Boom Do I Need?
The stated size of a column and boom system refers to its height clearance and boom travel dimensions, rather than the machine’s overall physical height and width.
For example, a 3m x 3m column & boom allows:
- 3000mm vertical lift (floor to underside of boom arm)
- 3000mm horizontal boom travel
- overall boom arm length of approximately 5000mm
This means the system must be carefully sized against both the job diameter and the building height.
A 3m x 3m model is approximately 4100mm tall overall, and when welding a cylinder sat on rotators (which typically raise the workpiece by approx. 500mm), it will generally clear cylinders up to 2.3m diameter.
For larger fabrications such as 3.3m diameter silos, a 4m x 4m model is normally required, with an overall height of approximately 5300mm.
Will a Column & Boom Fit in My Building?
This is one of the most important considerations.
Column & boom manipulators can be extremely tall, and insufficient building height beneath the crane hook or crane beam is a major issue.
For example, a 5m x 5m model is approximately 6.4 metres tall.
You typically require a minimum of 500mm clearance above the fully raised column to the lowest obstruction, whether that is:
- crane hook
- crane beam
- lighting gantry
- roof steelwork
This ensures the crane can safely pass over once the machine is erected.
We always assist customers in sizing the correct machine to ensure:
- safe access into the building
- sufficient erection clearance
- operational boom lift clearance
- crane compatibility
Will the Boom Arm Clear the Workpiece on Rotators?
When cylinders or vessels are mounted on welding rotators, the job is typically raised by approximately 500mm, which must be added to the workpiece diameter when calculating required boom lift height.
This is absolutely critical.
For example:
- 2800mm diameter cylinder
- plus 500mm rotator lift
- requires 3300mm minimum boom clearance
Our team will always calculate whether the boom arm can safely travel above the workpiece before specifying the system.
Static Base or Travelling Base?
A static base column & boom is generally the easiest and fastest solution to install and position within a workshop.
This is ideal where the machine can reach the weld prep from a fixed location.
A travelling base model is required when welding long vessels, silos, or cylinders made up of multiple sections, where the boom must travel alongside the workpiece.
This system runs on floor-mounted rail of any required length.
Travelling bases require:
- additional workshop space
- rail installation
- more complex setup
- accurate parallel alignment
However, they provide full seam access without needing to repeatedly reposition the job on the crane.
