Benefits of Plasma Cutting

Plasma cutting provides one of the fastest, cleanest, and most precise metal cutting processes available for fabrication, industrial maintenance, demolition, pipework, structural steel, and workshop applications. Modern inverter plasma systems deliver exceptional cutting quality together with outstanding portability, making plasma cutting one of the most versatile cutting processes used throughout modern fabrication industries.

Extremely Clean & Precise Cutting

Plasma cutting produces highly accurate and extremely clean cuts with minimal slag and reduced cleanup requirements compared to traditional thermal cutting methods. The concentrated plasma arc allows operators to achieve:

  • neater cut edges
  • tighter cutting control
  • reduced distortion
  • excellent cutting precision
  • cleaner fabrication preparation

across a wide range of metal cutting applications.

Fast Cutting Speeds

One of the major advantages of plasma cutting is the exceptionally high cutting speed it provides across steel, stainless steel, and aluminium materials. Plasma systems dramatically reduce fabrication cutting time compared to grinding or mechanical cutting methods, improving workshop productivity and fabrication efficiency.

Portable & Lightweight Equipment

Modern inverter plasma cutters are highly portable and compact, allowing systems to be transported and deployed easily without requiring forklifts or heavy lifting equipment. This makes plasma cutting ideal for:

  • site fabrication
  • maintenance work
  • shutdown projects
  • workshop environments
  • mobile repair operations

where portability and rapid setup are important.

Reduced Fire Risk Compared to Oxy Fuel Cutting

Unlike traditional oxy fuel cutting systems, plasma cutters do not require multiple combustible gas bottles, significantly reducing fire risk and simplifying site setup. Plasma cutting systems provide a safer and more practical cutting solution across many workshop and industrial environments.

Cuts Mild Steel, Stainless & Aluminium

Modern plasma systems provide excellent cutting capability across:

  • mild steel
  • stainless steel
  • aluminium

making them highly versatile fabrication tools for general engineering and industrial cutting applications.

Industrial Hire Plant Capable of Cutting up to 57mm

Spectrum’s industrial plasma cutter hire fleet includes high-powered cutting systems capable of cutting materials up to approximately 57mm severance capacity, allowing heavy-duty industrial cutting capability across demanding fabrication applications.

Torch Consumable Support Included

Spectrum supplies full torch consumable support with plasma cutter hire equipment, including:

  • cutting tips
  • electrodes
  • shields
  • swirl rings
  • consumable spares

ensuring customers maintain reliable cutting performance throughout the hire period.

Compressed Air Requirements

Plasma cutting performance is heavily influenced by the quality, volume, and consistency of the compressed air supply. Smaller portable 240V plasma cutters with integrated compressors are excellent for portability, quick setup, and light fabrication work, typically providing cutting capability up to approximately 8mm thickness without requiring an external compressor. These compact systems are ideal for maintenance work and mobile repair applications, however they are generally lower duty, lower amperage, and operate at slower cutting speeds compared to industrial plasma systems.

For faster, cleaner, and higher-capacity cutting performance, both 240V and 415V industrial plasma cutters are typically operated using dedicated compressed air systems with substantially greater airflow capability. The minimum recommended compressor specification for:

  • 240V plasma cutters is typically a 200 litre / 3 HP compressor
  • 415V industrial plasma cutters is typically a 270 litre tank / 7.5 HP / 23 CFM compressor using 10mm ID 20 bar air hose

Correct airflow volume and pressure are essential for maintaining clean arc stability, cutting speed, consumable life, and overall plasma cutting performance.

Spectrum supplies all required crimped air fittings and connection equipment with hire packages including:

  • male and female PCL BSP quick release fittings
  • Jaymac claw fittings
  • anti-whip steel safety cable restraints

ensuring safe and reliable compressor integration across workshop and site cutting environments.
