These are great machine packages, HOWEVER, the little red battery pack it comes with (used to ignite the striker) is rubbish. The battery takes a long time to charge, and even when it is doesn’t produce anywhere near enough current voltage to allow for consistent striking (igniting of the rod).
The battery really is that bad it can be nearly impossible to get the rod to strike up even with a clean copper striker and fully charged battery (it really is piddly), so don’t worry if it’s not working. It’s not you.
With a special torech and cables connections, these can be connected to welding machine terminals (+ & -) with much bigger open circuit voltage generated ie. 80 volts, however, this is not ideal for portable site usage applications.
What we do here at Spectrum is remove that little battery (seen in the last gallery image), and upgrade it for a much bigger and more powerful car battery. We also fit proper welding cable, plugs and socket connections, and isolator, meaning a proper heavy-duty reliable system.
