Purple E3 (the new red) – The highest current carrying capacity tungsten for both AC and DC

Red tip tungstens had always been the best tungstens for high-quality DC TIG welding, but now the purple E3 offers better properties. Ultimately, the E3 is an advanced version of red, blue, and black tungstens. These can be used on both AC/DC, and even have a higher current capacity that dedicated zirconiated white tip used for aluminium. See tungsten amperage load chart here.

Made up from lanthanum, zirconium, and yttrium, E3 electrodes contain a minimum of 98% tungsten and up to 1.5% lanthanum.

When used with our tungsten grinders these are the ultimate product for reducing arc wander, guaranteeing consistent results, and long service life.

  • Tungsten:

The base metal, making up the majority of the electrode.

  • Rare Earth Oxides:

A mixture of rare earth oxides, including lanthanum, zirconium, and yttrium, are added to improve arc starting, lower electrode temperature, and provide more consistent weld characteristics.

  • Lanthanum:

A specific rare earth element, typically present at around 1.5% in E3 electrodes, enhances current-carrying capacity and arc stability.

  • Zirconium and Yttrium:
Small percentages of these elements are also included, further contributing to the electrode’s performance characteristics

Product Description

Whereas black tip lanthanated tungsten electrodes are amazing for maintaining a sharp tip, purple E3 also contain lanthanum, meaning excellent tip retention. This is crucial for precise welding and preventing contamination.

With lanthanum being the primary rare earth element, these have been developed in part to tackle the radioactive thorium of red tip. The E3 is an extremely durable product that allows for extra-long tip life, vastly reduced abrasion, and overall low heat load on the electrode.

They are known for their ease of arc starting, consistent welding properties, stable arc, and longer service life compared to other tungsten types.

  • Non-Radioactive: Unlike thoriated tungsten electrodes, Purple E3 electrodes do not contain any radioactive materials, making them safer for both the welder and the environment.
  • Non-contamination: Purple E3 tungsten electrodes are known for their resistance to contamination due to their composition and properties (better than red thoriated)
  • Excellent Ignition Characteristics: They provide superior ignition and re-ignition capabilities, which is particularly beneficial in applications that require frequent starts and stops.
  • Versatile Use: These electrodes are suitable for both AC and DC welding, making them versatile for a wide range of materials, including non-alloyed and high-alloyed steel, aluminium, titanium, nickel, copper, and magnesium alloys.
  • Longer Service Life: Purple E3 electrodes tend to have a longer lifespan compared to other types, such as thoriated tungsten, due to their ability to operate at cooler temperatures.
  • Increased Current Capacity: Outstanding when used at higher amperage. The lower operating temperature allows for increased current capacity, enhancing the efficiency, effectiveness and control of the welding process.
  • Improved Arc Stability: Because E3 electrodes can handle welding current a lot more efficiently than other tungstens (even better than red tip on DC), they provide a stable and focused arc, which is crucial for consistent welding results and minimising issues like arc wander.

Additional information

Electrodes with rare earth (mixed oxides). In comparison to thoriated electrodes this electrode is less harmful to the environment and not radioactive. The electrodes offer excellent ignition characteristics and consistent welding properties. They are universal and suitable for all applications in the whole range of DC and AC welding for non-alloyed and high-alloyed steel, aluminium, titanium, nickel, copper and magnesium alloys. Because of their great ignoition properties they are also suitable for automated welding. Due to the low electrode temperature, they offer an incressed current capacity and longer service life than thoriated electrodes.

  • Longer lasting

  • Non-Radioactive

  • Cooler running than Thoriated

  • Suitable for most DC applications

  • Superior repeatable ignition characteristics
